Dear Chess Friend,

You have created a fine and well-written website, which deserves to be known by all chess enthusiasts et will be useful to everyone. I have the pleasure to inform you that the link to your Chess Museum is now available in the Chess-Theory Link Collection (more than 10 000 links) in the page: Unclassified New Links, Rubric: Art & Art Galleries.

Hiya

In 1964 I purchased an ivory chess set from a Chinese merchant in Aden. The 'black' pieces are stained red/brown ivory, they are plain style pieces. The unusual thing is that many of the pieces unscrew to reveal tiny secret compartments, anyone shed some light on the set?
Thanks

Peter

Hi, Peter,
Without seeing the set is not possible to be certain, but I think the 'secret compartments' may just be the space left below the thread on the female side to allow the full travel of the screw cutting tool when cutting the thread.
also, a lot of Chinese and Indian plain turned and decorated turned sets make use of the part of the ivory with the nerve hollow in it. This is occasionally packed with shavings

Hello
excuse me for contacting you...
I found your chess site, it is wonderful, some of your pieces are beautiful in their own right as works of art!
I do not play chess nor collect it but I appreciate the art.
I was searching to identify my own inherited set - you lable it as ;
'British Small Lead' it is in very good condition but I do not have the box.

I would appreciate your help with dating, who made it and its worth?

I thankyou for your time

Hello:
Always enjoy your chess set site. Thank you. In you section on Staunton sets you picture a set which classify as 1950 Russian.

I think it may be a 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad set. For this Olympiad, a special chess set was designed by Andrija Maurovic,a famous Yugoslav cartoon writer. I have not yet found any clear photos of the original 1950 Dubrovnik set. Could you possibly show some profile pictures of the knights? Or even email me some close-ups? This may help clarify the origin of your set. Thanks again for your wonderful website.

Kind regards,
Mike Ladzinski

WHO ARE YOU, dear Fellow-Collector,
with such a fantastic programme?
If the question on the 1964 Aden-bought
ivory-set were still pending:
It was on sale in Hongkong-Kowloon,
Nathan-Road, made in the New Territories which now is China,
as a wonderful set in European style,
ideal to play with. I bought mine there between 1972-76. The name of the dearler´s salesmen behind the counter was Stephen Lam.
