Hiya

In 1964 I purchased an ivory chess set from a Chinese merchant in Aden. The 'black' pieces are stained red/brown ivory, they are plain style pieces. The unusual thing is that many of the pieces unscrew to reveal tiny secret compartments, anyone shed some light on the set?
Thanks

Peter

Hi Pete, these recesses seem to ahve been necesary in order to introduce the threading tool - there is probably nothing mysterious or out of the ordinary about them.

Best regards

Hi Pete,
I agree with Nicholas but your date of purchase and location is very interesting .

I purchased what looks like a similar set in 1967 at the military Post Exchange in Ben Hoa, Vietnam in 1967. If I remember correctly it was $50US at the time.

That seems to have been a standard set in the East between Shanghay and Bangkok. Today, with the ivory ban extending to chess sets, You need a CITES document to be able to sell it....
