Chess opulence
the Jaeger auction at Waddingtons - December 5 2016
Only 13 lots were offered for auction this Monday from the fabulous chess collection of Pharma entrepreneur Halvor Jaeger at Waddingtons auction house in Toronto. This is a bit less than the 20 sets sold in June at the same venue, and a lot less than the offer exactly one year ago. At the going rate, we predict the offer in June 2017 will be about 9 lots or less.....in any case, a good 50 Jaeger sets are still in play in the auction roulette at an online auction of Waddingtons, and another short online auction on the 8th of December - see Collectors News for details....
Good show
By a rule of thumb assessment, this short auction was quite successful . The admittedly low estimates were topped throughout- in the case of Lot 143 even by a tenfold! For punters with some of the ready at the ready, a few of the sets will have proved very good - and reasonable buys as well. As for the top lot 131, the result is not overwhelming - but in June a much better set from Paris with the them "Battle of Pavia" was sold for CAD 64.500.- (see Canadian Bonanza) . Lot 130 - the baroque knight in silver - also underperformed IMHO - possibly because there is little information around on the silver smith Lütkens... or because the whole set has been dispersed over time.
It remains to be seen what happens in the side shows - especially the one on Dec. 8 run by ZQ Art.
Dec. 10: See the Postscript in Collectors News for the secondary auctions and their results....
