Indian Chess Sets

India as the place of origin of chess has provided the world with a lehtora of different chess sets - among them the fabulous abstract Muslim sets in im peccable handicraft from the 16th century onwards. Later the carved ivory chess sets for th British produced in Vizagapatnam and Berhampore set a standard of quality - and today India is the principal purveyor of wooden chess sets for the whole world!

Colours of Rajasthan

Opulently coloured set of Rajasthan chessmen, probably made for export in the 50ies of the 20th C. - maybe even before the war. These sets are all riders and no footmen, elephants, horses, camels and howdahs - great display, simple or schematic  carving and high colour, as usual in Rajasthan.
